For an artist attempts to penetrate the market, few opportunities is as good as this.
To promote the use of condoms, the Philadelphia Department of public health's Division of Disease Control sponsors a contest to design its prophylactic wrappers.
The contest has been extended to January 14, invites artists to submit designs for a "unique and positive message" said Carol Johnson, Director of the division of disease control.
The winning design, chosen by online voters that adorn the wrappers of at least 500 000 condoms which distributes the city. The city presents approximately 1 million free condoms each year to schools and other places, health clinics, and aims to double the total in 2011.
"We try to push the message of prevention," said Johnson. "We seek something bold to help promote the use of condoms."
Philadelphia has a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. Compared to the rest of the State residents, residents of the city are about five times more likely to have chlamydia, six times more likely to have gonorrhoea and 40 times more likely to have syphilis, according to the Ministry of health of the city.
